understanding Molo

Molo is located in Kenya Africa in the beautiful and fertile Rift Valley. Molo is home to many tribes (in fact there are people in Molo representing all of the 42 tribes of Kenya). The farmlands of the area are so rich that they can not only feed the peoples of Kenya but many of the neighboring nations as well, including Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and even Ethiopia. Unfortunately in 1992, 1997 and again in 2008 the area experienced severe tribal clashes. Sadly people were killed and children were orphaned. It also resulted in a stream of refuges from the surrounding rural areas into the town of Molo.

Historically speaking these tribes have been played against each other by the colonial government. The colonizing power, Great Britain used tribal and ethnic differences to maintain themselves in power. After independence in 1963 these tribal differences continued to have a negative effect on the peoples of Kenya and have had a profoundly destructive effect upon those living in Molo. A local politician described Molo as the hot bed of "tribal clashes". The scarcity of resources (specifically land) has been one of the major issues.

Currently the conflicts have subsided but the problems caused by the conflicts are many. People have been evicted from their farms and have mostly relocated to Molo. The influx of refuges has created a severe strain on the limited resources including water, housing, medical facilities, school facilities and employment opportunities. This has resulted in many broken families, poverty is a major problem, unemployment is above 50% and many have been reduced to a life of beggary. Prostitution is on the increase and children drift into the town as the are unable to feed at home and are forced to fend for themselves. Molo has many street children and street families, facing both disease and crime.

By volunteering at the Chazon Children's Centre, you'll be having a major impact on the children of the area as well as the entire community.
