In June of 2008 Naomi and her three children escaped from their home as it burned, a tragic but common occurrence - their home was destroyed during the tribal clashes. Her husband left and Naomi (who didn't have work) was unable to provide for her three small children. Naomi 28 was married when she was just 16 and never attended school. After the fire the Red Cross provided them with a tent to live in and eventually, with the help of the Kenyan government, she was able to buy a very small house. The house was in bad condition, it was extremely small and there were holes all over the walls which made it very cold at night.
Because Naomi was unable to provide food for her family Michael (just 8 years old at that time) left home to look for food, to beg and live in the streets of Molo. Michael was found by a volunteer from the US Virginia Duffy. Michael took Virginia to his home where she found the other children badly malnourished and Naomi in an unstable mental condition. Lucy and Samuel Directors of the Chazon Children's Centre enrolled Michael in their school and also gave Naomi a job working in the garden at the Chazon school. Eventually she and her family moved into the watchman's house on the Chazon grounds. At this point Michael 9 and Jane 5 are both attending the Chazon school and soon John (who is 3) will start. The family is doing much better now but Naomi still struggles to provide enough food.
